You can ask for help today

If gambling is affecting your money, mood or relationships, step away from gambling and contact a support service. You do not have to wait until things become a crisis. A professional can help you work out the next steps.

In India: call Tele MANAS on 14416 for round-the-clock mental health support. This is a general mental health service that can provide counselling and connections to further care. See the official service information.

If you are in immediate danger or might hurt yourself: contact local emergency services or go to the nearest emergency department. Ask someone you trust to stay with you while you get help.

Notice when gambling stops feeling manageable

Gambling harm is about its effect on your life, not just the size of a bet. You might repeatedly spend money set aside for bills, feel driven to recover a loss, keep your activity secret or find that gambling interrupts sleep, work and relationships. These are reasons to pause and speak to someone. They are not a diagnosis, and you do not need a diagnosis to ask for support.

A useful first conversation can be simple: “I am spending more time or money gambling than I planned, and I want help stopping.” You can write that sentence down before calling or opening a support chat. Describe what is happening now; you do not need a perfect account of every past decision.

Set clear limits before any gambling takes place

Choosing not to gamble is always an option. If you do gamble, decide in advance what money and time you can afford to lose, after essential costs and commitments. Write down a stopping point and keep it fixed. There is no universal safe amount, and a spending limit cannot guarantee that gambling will be harmless.

  • Protect essential money: keep rent, food, bills and savings commitments outside your gambling budget. Do not borrow to continue.
  • Limit deposits and losses: check what the platform's deposit limit and loss limit actually count. A deposit limit alone may not restrict money already in the account.
  • Limit time: set a session limit and a reminder away from the gambling app. Stop when the planned time ends, whether the session is winning or losing.
  • Make stopping the default: do not increase a limit to chase a loss or complete a promotion. Turn off promotional notifications and remove saved payment shortcuts where possible.

Read our guide to limits, time-outs and self-exclusion for the differences between these controls. A reminder prompts a decision; an enforced restriction prevents a particular action. Check which one you are setting.

Use barriers when a limit is not enough

If you keep overriding your plan or feel unable to stop, seek support rather than relying on a larger budget or a different game. Consider a time-out or self-exclusion, ask your bank about available gambling-payment blocks, and explore device-blocking tools. Confirm the services and devices each measure covers. One operator's exclusion does not automatically close every other account.

Save the confirmation of any restriction and ask for marketing messages to stop. Do not open a replacement account to get around an exclusion. These steps create distance from gambling; support can help you address what brings you back to it.

India: mental health support and further care

Tele MANAS is India's national tele-mental health service. Its 14416 short code and 1800-89-14416 number provide access to mental health support. Explain any gambling-related distress and ask about suitable care in your area. The official programme page describes counselling, specialist connections and links to in-person services. It is not a gambling-specific helpline.

If someone else's gambling is affecting you

You can seek support for your own wellbeing even if the person who gambles is not ready to ask for help. Explain the effect on you without trying to settle every disagreement at once. Decide what financial help you can realistically offer and protect your own essential expenses.

Gam-Anon's meeting directory includes support for people affected by a friend or family member's gambling. A mental health professional can also help with distress, boundaries and communication. If there is a threat to your safety, prioritize emergency or local safeguarding help.
