Variance

Variance measures the probability-weighted average squared distance of outcomes from their mean. It describes dispersion, not the direction of expected profit, and its squared units make standard deviation useful for a more intuitive interpretation.

A small worked distribution

Consider a simplified return that is ₹0 half the time and ₹20 half the time. Mean return is ₹10. Each possible outcome is ₹10 away from the mean, so population variance is 0.5 × 100 + 0.5 × 100 = 100 square rupees. Standard deviation is the square root, ₹10.

Compare a different model always returning ₹10. It has the same mean but zero variance. The example shows why average return cannot describe session uncertainty. It is an artificial model for explanation, not a claim about a particular game's payout distribution.

Stakes scale the spread

If every monetary outcome is doubled, the mean and standard deviation double, while variance becomes four times as large. Comparisons therefore need a common stake basis. A high-stake game's larger currency variance does not automatically imply a different underlying relative distribution.

Sample variance is an estimate

Observed results can be used to estimate spread, but a short sample may omit rare prizes. A sample variance calculation also differs from population variance in its denominator when estimating an unknown distribution. A provider's theoretical model and a player's observed session answer different questions.

What the number cannot tell you

Variance does not predict the next result, establish fairness or guarantee that a high payout follows a losing streak. A broad volatility label can summarise spread without publishing the exact statistic. If a numerical variance is supplied, ask which outcomes, stakes, features and distribution it covers. Keep that measure separate from hit frequency, expected value and actual profit.

Why do sample and population formulas differ?

When estimating an unknown population variance from a sample, a common unbiased estimator divides the sum of squared deviations from the sample mean by n minus one. The sample mean was itself estimated from those observations, which affects the degrees of freedom. A complete theoretical distribution instead uses its probabilities directly. Do not mix the resulting labels without explaining the method. Both calculations describe spread, but a sample estimate can remain unstable when rare outcomes are absent or the sampling process is unsuitable.
