Standard deviation

Standard deviation is the square root of variance and measures outcome spread around a mean in the original units. A monetary standard deviation can be read in currency units, unlike variance, which uses squared units.

A simple calculation

For a return of ₹0 or ₹20 with equal probability, mean return is ₹10. Variance is 100 square rupees, so standard deviation is ₹10. A second process always returning ₹10 has the same mean and zero standard deviation. The statistic reveals a difference hidden by the average.

If all stakes and monetary outcomes double, standard deviation doubles too. The relative game distribution may remain unchanged. Comparing a ₹1-stake statistic with a ₹100-stake statistic without adjustment therefore gives a misleading impression of their intrinsic spread.

Individual outcomes versus an estimated average

The spread of individual rounds is different from the uncertainty in a sample mean. Under suitable independent observations, the standard error of a mean involves standard deviation divided by the square root of sample size. That relationship should not be applied blindly to correlated feature stages or changing configurations.

A normal-distribution shortcut can fail

Familiar statements about most observations lying within one or two standard deviations depend on distribution assumptions. Slot payouts can be highly skewed, with many zeros and rare large awards. A standard deviation alone does not justify treating their outcomes as normally distributed or predicting a likely prize interval.

Reading a published figure

Ask whether it is theoretical or sample-based, which stakes and features it covers, and what units are used. Pair it with the mean and distribution context. A high value means larger spread under the model, not that a large prize is imminent. It also says nothing by itself about fairness, legal availability or a service's payment performance.

Is standard deviation a maximum possible loss?

No. It measures spread around a mean and does not identify a hard bound. An outcome can lie many standard deviations from the mean under an appropriate distribution. A game can also have a contractual maximum prize or a finite possible loss per stake, which are different quantities. A description should state the units, mean, distribution and sample basis rather than presenting the statistic as a protected range. Limits on account spending need their own controls and cannot be inferred from statistical dispersion.
