Payline

A payline is a defined path or arrangement of symbol positions used to evaluate a winning combination in a slot game. Some games instead use ways-to-win or other evaluation systems.

A line game specifies which lines are active and how matching symbols must appear. The direction, starting position and line stake can change how a combination is evaluated.

Active lines and total stake

In a conventional line game, a payline is one specified route through reel positions. A horizontal row is only one possible route; diagonal and zigzag paths may also count. The rules say whether all lines are always active or whether a player selects a subset. A combination on an inactive path can fail to pay even when its symbols look aligned.

If ten lines each use a ₹2 line stake, total stake is ₹20. Adding ten more lines at the same line stake raises the total to ₹40. If the interface instead holds the total stake at ₹20, the amount assigned to each line may change. Never infer the cost of a spin solely from the number of lines shown.

Lines versus ways and clusters

A ways-to-win game evaluates qualifying symbol positions across successive reels without requiring one fixed route. Cluster games evaluate connected groups instead. A line count therefore cannot be used as a universal measure of how many winning possibilities a slot offers. More evaluation paths also do not, by themselves, establish a higher RTP.

What to inspect before interpreting a result

Open the line map and check the direction, starting position and minimum matching count. Some games pay both ways or include exceptions during a feature. Record whether the payout is based on line stake or total stake. A near-looking pattern is not a partial win: it must meet the complete condition listed for that game configuration.

In practice

A matching symbol sequence across the top row pays only if that path is a qualifying active line and the sequence meets the game's rules. Visual alignment alone is insufficient.

What to check

Check whether the game uses lines, ways or clusters. Confirm the total stake and how it relates to any displayed line stake.
