UPI

UPI, the Unified Payments Interface, is an Indian payment system developed by NPCI for supported account-to-account payments. A UPI payment record describes a transfer; it does not establish a recipient service's legal availability or contractual reliability.

Instruction, authorisation and status

A payment can be initiated through a supported app using a recipient identifier or another permitted route. Before authorising it, examine the recipient, amount and purpose. A bank debit, app status and receiving account credit are related but separate records. A pending status requires reconciliation rather than an assumption that the money has reached the intended service.

For example, a ₹1,000 instruction can appear pending in the sending app while the bank has recorded a debit. Record the transaction reference and time, then use the official app or bank grievance process. Sending ₹1,000 again creates another instruction and can complicate identifying which transfer the recipient later credits.

Credentials are not payment evidence

A UPI PIN authorises an applicable payment action. It is not a receipt, support reference or ordinary identity document. Do not disclose it to a person claiming they need it to find a missing transfer. Use the authenticated app for authorisation and the transaction reference for tracing.

Payment capability versus service support

A platform advertising a UPI logo might have deposit conditions, account-name requirements or a different withdrawal route. Check the current authenticated cashier rather than assuming two-way support. A successful UPI transfer demonstrates that particular payment event, not that every account or location is eligible for a separate service.

What a useful record includes

Keep the amount, currency, sender-side status, recipient identifier, reference and timestamps, with private details protected when sharing evidence. Ask whether a dispute concerns an uncredited transfer, an unauthorised instruction or a provider's internal balance. Those are distinct problems with different evidence and responsible parties.

Does a payment request mean someone is sending you money?

Read the actual action shown by the authenticated app. A request requiring you to approve an outgoing amount is different from a received credit, regardless of a caller's description. Check the recipient and amount instead of assuming an approval screen is a refund. NPCI's security guidance treats the PIN as confidential. Use transaction history to confirm incoming money and the official grievance process for a discrepancy. A support message should not persuade you to approve an unrelated debit to investigate an earlier transfer.
