Delivery and generation methods
Codes can be sent through a channel such as SMS or generated by an authenticator according to a defined process. The service determines validity, retry limits and which action the code approves. A code for login is not necessarily interchangeable with a payment code or phone-verification code.
If a message states that a code approves a ₹2,000 payment, providing it to someone claiming to verify a refund can authorise the wrong action. Read the purpose, amount and destination. A genuine-looking support name does not change what the code is capable of approving.
Why one-time does not mean phishing-proof
An attacker can try to relay a valid code before it expires. The threat concerns immediate misuse, not only reuse tomorrow. SMS delivery also has different risks from other authenticators. A service's OTP step can provide additional protection while still requiring careful handling of the underlying request.
Code entry and troubleshooting
Use the intended authenticated page or app. If several codes were requested, a newer request may invalidate an earlier one under the service's rules. Do not keep requesting codes without identifying the correct process and number. Never publish a screenshot containing an active code as payment evidence.
What verification establishes
A successful phone-code check can establish access to that number at that time. It does not alone establish age, full identity, ownership of every payment account or eligibility for an offer. Preserve the verification outcome rather than the secret itself. Transaction references and support tickets are appropriate tracing tools; live passcodes are authorisation credentials.
Should support ever ask you to read out a current code?
Treat a current code as a credential for its stated process. A caller's role claim does not change the action it can approve. If a code is needed in an official workflow, use the authenticated interface intended for that action rather than transmitting it through an unrelated conversation. Payment references and ticket IDs can locate records without granting access. If an unexpected code arrives, inspect the service through its legitimate route and avoid approving a request you did not initiate.
